- she's the owner of four dogs (three of them adopted through a rescue organization).The key to safety with pets lies with properly educating your children. While no method is foolproof, teaching your child some basic rules about pet safety will go a long way toward helping them develop a happy and safe relationship with animals.

Do not disturb an animal while it is eating.
Always ask the owner's permission before petting a dog. Then ask the dog's permission! How do you ask a dog's permission? Approach the dog from his side in a slow calm manner, offer your hand with the palm down. Allow him to smell your hand and give his approval before going further.
